Manage Print Subscription / Tax Receipt.Percale is much better for staying cool because it's 1x1 weave allows it to breathe better. Also, sateen, due to its weave pattern, sleeps hot. Percale will never be as silky as sateen or as shiny, due to the weave, but percale has a crisp feel that is very nice. There seems to be a trend away from buying sheets because they're silky soft and look pretty, and back to buying sheets that are comfortable. Now, we know better, and percale is getting attention again. Percale, because of the weave pattern, tends to have a lower thread count than equivalent quality sateen sheets, which hurt percale back when everyone was obsessed with crazy high thread counts as a measure of quality. People are getting educated now about linens, specifically about how they've been mislead about thread counts for the sake of marketing. That's obviously a huge deal for the kind of people who frequent this sub Reddit. Sateen, which became popular for being shiny and silky, uses a 1x4 weave pattern, making it quite a bit less durable than percale. Now percale seems to be making a comeback for a variety of reasons.ĭurability. It's the style of sheet that your grandmother would have had on her beds 40 years ago, but it went out of style with the rise of the "thread count" craze and the subsequent fad for sateen weave sheets. Percale is a plain weave (warp and weft threads are interwoven in a 1x1 pattern) with a minimum thread count of 180. They are a bit wrinkly coming out of the dryer (which doesn't bother me), but they stretch out fine once they are on the bed. I did purchase some Wamsutta (BB&B) cool touch percale cotton sheets earlier this year, and I have been happy with them so far. I also recommend this older BIFL thread for general thoughts on fabrics, weaves, and care of bedding: I suggest wading through the reviews and seeing if people are complaining about minor issues like wrinkling and not fitting a enormous pillowtop mattress, or if they have major issues like pilling, ripping, or threads falling apart. I attribute this to the fact that both cotton-poly blends and sateen weaves are getting more and more popular, and when people jump back to cotton/percale, they don't realize the difference that weaves and fabrics can make. I have found generally that most of the negative reviews of percale weave sheets tend to be about crispiness, wrinkles, uncomfortable, etc. You did not mention what kind of fabric you are looking for, but if you are looking for 100% cotton, it is not a wrinkle-free fabric (unless it is treated.) Polyester is certainly more wrinkle-free than cotton, but I personally do not like the feel of polyester. The mods are somewhat flexible with the rules as long as the OP explains in the comments.
